Journaling Prompts to Empower You
Resilience is not a special gift reserved for a few–it’s a skill that can be cultivated by anyone. Sometimes, though, we need to take a moment to reflect on where we stand in our personal resilience and how we can continue to grow and strengthen it. For now, I’ll guide you through a series of thoughtful journaling prompts.
Similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, these prompts will tap into five interconnected elements that form the foundation of resilience. Borrowing insights from Ann Masten, a renowned resilience researcher, we’ll reflect on essential factors like our basic needs, emotional regulation, support systems, adaptability, and purpose.
As you engage with these prompts, I encourage you to approach them with curiosity and kindness. Let’s begin.
Basic Needs and Safety
Our foundation for resilience begins with stability in our basic physical and emotional needs. When unmet, these needs can keep us in survival mode and limit us from thriving in life.
- Are there any areas of your life where you feel unsafe or uncertain?
- What steps could you take to create a sense of safety right now?
- What resources or routines currently help you meet your immediate needs?
- How do you usually ensure your basic needs are met when life gets rough?
Pause and reflect: What small steps can you take today to nurture a sense of safety?
Self-regulation
Resilience flourishes when we can manage our emotions and respond thoughtfully to challenges. Emotional regulation helps us navigate overwhelming situations with clarity and composure.
- How do you typically respond to a stressful situation or difficult emotions?
- What are some things you do to calm yourself during challenging times?
- Reflect on a time you stayed calm during a stressful moment. What helped you then?
Pause and reflect: What is one calming practice you can integrate into your daily routine?

Support System
As social beings, we need other people. Connection with others is a cornerstone of resilience as it provides emotional support, a sense of belonging, and a shared strength during tough times.
- Who in your life offers you the most support when you face challenges?
- How do you nurture meaningful connections with the people who matter to you?
- Are there relationships you’d like to strengthen or rebuild?
- How do you gauge whether a relationship recharges or drains your energy?
Pause and reflect: What is one thing you can do this week to connect with someone who uplifts you?
Resilient Thinking and Adaptability
Our thoughts and how we frame challenges can make a huge difference in how resilient we feel. By reframing setbacks, developing problem-solving skills, and emotional flexibility, we empower ourselves to turn setbacks into growth opportunities.
- When a setback occurs, what thoughts come to mind?
- What strategies have helped you overcome challenges before?
- How can you shift your focus from obstacles to possibilities?
- How do you approach challenges in your life?
Pause and reflect: What is one belief or thought pattern you’d like to reframe to support your growth?
Purpose and Meaning
A sense of purpose anchors us, giving us direction even when life gets hard. It’s this alignment between our actions and values that helps us stay resilient.
- What values are most important to you?
- How do these values guide you during tough times?
- What gives you a sense of fulfilment or purpose in your life?
- Reflect on a challenge you have overcome. How did it shape your sense of purpose?
Pause and reflect: What is one way you can align your daily actions with your larger purpose?
